Tekari RAJ FORT -

In the southern part of Bihar, this beautiful estate Tekari was created, maintained by the most prominent representative of Bhumihar clan, the Tekari family. The Tekari Raj here was visible from the early 18th century by various kings who ruled over large parts of Magadh. The jungle full of Tetris trees was the land selected for the gigantic Tekari fort . The huge Tekari Fort was established by Raja Sundar Singh, the bravest warrior king of Tekari.

Some photographs of the present day Tikari Fort -

The Fort which was constructed almost 250 years ago .... by the the Tekari Rajas who  were Bhumihars, chief of the Drontikar clanof the Bhardwaj gotra from the village of Tekari.

The brave Drontikar kings established this majestic fort whose beauty has been eclipsed by the harshness of Mother Earth.

All the nearby buildings you see are those of the erstwhile servants and vassal of Tekari Raj.

Tikari Raj involvement In the Independence Movement of 1857

 The Tikari Secret

The first king of Tikari Raj nine anna, Maharaja Hitnarayan Singh's wife Maharani Indrajeet Kunwar was religious, patriotic woman, the pain of the country being defeated, made her equally restless.

The spark of freedom was also burning in Tikari city. His flame had also gone to Tikari Raj family. It started with the 1857 ISV's freedom movement.

The freedom movement in Magadh was started by the queen. Tikari Raj had an advanced cannon, so the English officer had an eye on a king of Bihar and the queen of Tikari Raj.

The feeling of nationality was burning in the heart of Queen Indrajeet Kunwar. She didn't want to see her country underprivileged.

At the invitation of superstar Babu Veer Kunwar Singh of 1857 freedom struggle, the queen got involved and led her army, dressed as a Persian warrior at that time.

After getting the information of the queen coming to the Son river, the landlord of Shevtar State and the freedom movement fighter Babu Phool Singh went there and explained to the queen to return back for the sake of Tikari, On the explanation provided and repeated requests, the queen agreed and left her army and cannon there and returned back . The British could not recognize the Queen because she was dressed as a Persian warrior..

This fight for independence was recorded in the history of Tikari. Tikari Queen and Raj family had an indirect role in this movement. Somewhere the role of Tikari Raj family was seen suspiciously by English officers

Patna's then Commissioner William Taylor was suspicious about the role of Tikari Raj family. William Taylor had his spy around Tikari Raj, since Tikari Raj was a huge state at the time so naturally he had to keep a penny eye on Tikari Raj's action of indirectly helping the freedom movement activists were being provided financial aid by Tikari Raj.

Patna Commissioner William Taylor was convinced Tikari Raj provided shelter and financial support to the Queen's revolutionaries in 1857.

William Taylor had written a detailed letter to the provincial lieutenant governor Federek Holiday of the British King in Calcutta on the activities of the Tikari Raj at that time. At the end of the letter Taylor asked Federek Holiday to demolish Tikari fort. But the lieutenant governor didn't allow Taylor.

William Taylor had also received the support of District Magistrate J M Lewis, who was posted in Patna Division in this task.

Patna Division Commissioner William Taylor was very brutal and brave, filled with the spirit of terror and violence,  He had hung many rebels in Patna and raided several rebel's hideouts.

Patna's Nawab and reputed banker Luft Ali Khan was harassed by William Taylor. , but they were acquitted from the court every time. Taylor reopened her case then she was acquitted from the court.

Lt. Governor Federek Holiday was very angry with William Taylor's violent behavior. Saddened by his behavior, Bengal's Lieutenant Governor Federek Holiday,  finally transferred Taylor from Patna on August 4, 1857.

Provincial Lieutenant Governor Holiday Federek had no independent opinion of his government affairs. The opinion of friends and friends often guided them. They were peace loving, paid special attention to what others say.

Tikari Raj escaped the wrath of the British  due to lack of harmony between above officers.

Gaya's immediate collector Elanjo Mani writes that he was engaged in crushing the rebels in Sherghati, at the same time Patna Division Commissioner William Taylor's letter came in which he wrote that you should immediately reach Tikari Raj, the king of seven. Mod Narayan Singh has installed about 200 cannons around the fort. Elanjo immediately sent Tikari Raj a detective to check on the same. However the king had ordered all the cannons back to his fort premises as soon as the spy was reported.

At that time, the weapons of the rebels caught in Tikari and Gaya matched the weapons kept in Tikari Raj's arsenal. British officials seized Tikari Raj's weapons and 200 cannons kept in the fort.

At that time, there was a brass cannon making factory for Tikari Raj in Dawood Nagar under Tikari Raj, there was advanced and modern brass cannons molded. For this, Tikari Raj had called many artisans from Mirzapur of Uttar Pradesh to Dawood Nagar.

Rebels returning after successful revolt for the freedom movement in Bhagalpur were provided financial aid by Queen Indrajeet Kunwar.

The queen had a big hand in getting  killed, the son of Jangi Kumar of Tikari Raj, who used to speak for the British. Truly a very revolutionary Queen and very brave.

"Neither Maratha nor Mughal , the biggest terror is Military Brahman of Middle Ganga plain being led by Fateh Bahadur Shahi."

The MAHARAJA's WELL - Built by MAHARAJA of BENARES in ENGLAND.

From the -

http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-features/tp-metroplus/a-kings-largesse/article779961.ece

By RISHAD SAAM MEHTA :

Read on for a recount of an unlikely friendship between a Britisher and an Indian royal, and how a community across the seas benefited

Stoke Row in Oxfordshire is so small that if someone gave you a big map of Great Britain and a magnifying glass, finding it could become something to do between breakfast and lunch.

But, passing through this village with just 650 inhabitants two weeks ago, I came across a circular dome-shaped structure, the cupola of a well, painted Indian brick red and other bright colours. Loud and imposing, it strayed from the rustic scheme of the village. But, what caught my eye were the words on the periphery of the dome — “His Highness the Maharaja of Benares”.

What follows then is the story of how this well, known as the Maharaja's Well, came into existence, and improved the lot of the community.

The Well is a legacy of the friendship that two men from very different worlds shared — the son of an English country Squire, Edward Anderdon Reade, and His Highness The Maharaja Ishree Pershad Narayan Singh Bahadur, Maharaja of Benares.

The story starts before the Indian War of Independence in 1857. Reade worked in India for 34 years, and was Lieutenant Governor, North Western Provinces. One of his deeds was to sink a well in 1831 to aid the local community in Azimurgh. It was during his tenure in India that he became close friends with the Maharaja of Benares.

Somewhere around 1850, he happened to mention his childhood in Stoke Row; a narrative about a child being beaten for stealing water sparked an idea in the Maharaja's head. That, was the seed of the well.

In 1863, the Maharaja decided to bestow Stoke Row with a free, public well. Reade, now back in England, went about giving form to the Maharaja's generosity. On His Highness's request, work was started on March 10, 1863, the day that the then Prince of Wales got married, and was officially opened on May 24, 1864, Queen Victoria's 45th birthday.

The well was dug by hand to a depth of 368 feet, which is deeper than St. Paul's Cathedral is tall.

The superstructure on top is 23 feet tall, and is topped by a brilliant gilded dome that incorporates several glass lenses to allow the light through and show the waterline below. The cost of constructing the well was GBP 353!

This benefaction was the first-known charity in Great Britain by an Indian, and it started quite a trend. A year later, another well was sunk barely three miles away, near Ispden Church, funded by yet another Indian. The Maharaja of Vizianagaram funded the drinking water fountain in Hyde Park, near Marble Arch in London.

The cherry orchard

Coming back to the well in Stoke Row, the Maharaja didn't stop his philanthropy once the well was built. It was now providing 700 gallons a day to the local community, and he wanted to ensure this for posterity. To this end, the Indian practice of maintenance of a well financed by the profits of a local fruit harvest was adopted. The Maharaja again generously loosened his purse strings and donated for the purchase of a four-acre cherry orchard adjacent to the well, and for the erection of a cottage for the well warden.

The warden lived rent-free in the cottage, and was given an annual income of one pound. This was to be raised to two pounds if the income from the cherry orchard exceeded 10 pounds. Incidentally, the village's solitary and very cosy pub is called ‘The Cherry Tree'. The Maharaja's philanthropy continued even after this. He celebrated royal events in England with some additions to his adopted village.

For instance, on March 21, 1871, when the Marquis of Lorne married Princess Louise, a footpath was completed that made access from the lower road (today called Cox's Lane) to the well easier.

According to the Berks and Oxon Advertiser of the day, the footpath was opened “with suitable demonstrations of loyalty and rejoicings which the school children will never forget”.

Ten years later in 1882, another royal event — the survival of Queen Victoria following an assassination attempt — again sparked of celebrations in Stoke Row, funded by the Maharaja.

When Reade died in 1886, all contact between the locality and Benares was lost. But, the well continued to quench everyone's thirst for at least 50 years after that, thanks to the funds from the cherry orchard. When piped water arrived in the early part of the 20th Century, the well fell to disuse.

In 1958, a chance visitor from Oxford to Benares was asked by the then Maharaja about the well that his grandfather had built in Stoke Row. Luckily, the visitor did know that it still existed.

And, with a sense of timing like his grandfather, the present Maharaja chose the visit of HRH Queen Elizabeth to Benares in 1961 to point out that the centenary of the well wasn't too far away. He invited the Duke of Edinburgh to grace the occasion at Stoke Row on April 8, 1964, and 1,500 people had a lovely spring day out. This timing of ‘well events' with royal events continued. In fact, the first step of restoring the well was taken on July 29, 1981, when Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, married Diana Spencer.

Such is the rich and colourful history of the magnificent well that stands in the little village of Stoke Row. The locals here might never have tasted chicken tikka masala, but mention Maharaja Ishree of Benares, and respect shines in their eyes. To know more about the village, visit www.stokerow.net

Below is a close up of the Well with - "THE MAHARAJA OF BENARES" plates on the dome.
