HH Maharaja of Benaras - Sri Sir Aditya Narayan Singh, Maharaj Bahadur attending Marriage Function - 1936

Following is the photograph from 1936 of HH Maharaja of Benaras - Sri Sir Aditya Narayan Singh , Sahib Bahadur , Kashi Naresh surrounded by prominent Bhumihar Zamindars from Bihar. It is one of the rare photographs showing his highness glory and power.

As one can see from the photograph , the Maharaja of Benaras is surrounded by various eminent personalities from various Zamindaris of Bihar.

One can see Rajkumar Jagat Kishore Prasad Narayan Singh (groom) of Maksudpur Raj seated just behind Kashi Naresh. Other dignitaries were  Sri R.P.N. Shahi of Gabhirar Estate (IAS Officer and would go onto become Commissioner of Patna). He is the maternal uncle of Kumar Kameshwari Nandan Singh of Sheohar Raj. The paternal uncle of Kumar Kameshwari Nandan Singh is Rajkumar Ratneshwari Nandan Singh - to the left of Kashi Naresh.

Kumar Kameshwari Nandan Singh is wearing a silk dress as the sacred "thread" ceremony - "janew" was performed on him. Kumar Kameshwari Nandan Singh would go onto become a senior advocate of Patna High Court as well as represented Bihar Government as Standing Counsel in Legal cases.

Rajkumar Jagat Kishore Prasad Narayan Singh would go onto become the 6th RAJA of MAKSUDPUR. He would also go on to serve as Member of Indian parliament for two terms as Rajya Sabha MP from 1962 - 1968 and then from 1978 - 1984. he would serve as Chairman of Gaya Development Authority from 1985-1988.

    1. Dear Ajai - Correction. The Maharaja of Benaras was from the bride's side (Sharati) No one would ever expect the then 77-year old Raja Chandreshwar Prasad Narayan Singh Of MAKSUDPUR and CHAINPUR to be in attendance of the Maharaja of Benaras. There would be enough emissaries for that purpose. Even the Raja of Sheohar would never be in attendance of any other Raja. Yes - There would be enough Kumars and Rajkumars to pay respect to various dignitaries like the Maharaja of Benaras.

    2. Sharati or Barati - Possibly you are right. But the point is different. The standard protocol for weddings was that the bridegroom was the 'king for the occasion". Hence he always occupied the Shah Nashin regardless of who were the invitees. Hence there was no order of precedence and there was no question of any raja being in attendance to any other.
The unusual thing about this picture is that The Benaras Maharaja occupies the Shah Nashin and the bridegroom has been relegated to the background. I know the Maksudpur side of the story. This is that in any function in Benaras the Shah Nashin was occupied by the Benaras Maharaja an not the 'Nausha' as he supposedly represented Lord Shiva. The Maksudpur Raja had led the Barat party which went by steamer from Chainpur to Benaras. But learning of this unique protocol, feigned being unwell and did not attend any function where the Shah-Nashin as not occupied by the groom. I have this from Raja Jagat himself. Anyway all these are academic in today's day and age. Its good that all of us are getting on in the new world.
