CHAINPUR ~ The Place , The Temples , The Dieties and much more

As one comes into Chainpur, one of the most important things we would notice are the different temples , the dieties' which itself has so much to say about the history of the place and off course the different Bhumihar Zamindar Families who while being dominant never forgot their family dieties or their temples.

So, one of the most memorable temples is that of the RAJA of Maksudpur and a Chainpur Babu - RAJA CHANDRESHWAR PRASAD NARAYAN SINGH which is situated in the main bazaar of Chainpur. Even, the local Police Station is within the four walls of the temple. And outside the temple you have all the shops on Raja Saheb's land. In the below photograph, the Chainpur Police Station is on the left side of the entrance to the sanctum of the temple.

Following are some of the dieties in the above Temple -

 And remember that Eksariyas who are from Parashar Gotra should follow this-  पराशर गोत्र वाले के लिए  भगवान शंकर का  आराधना करना उनका सबसे बड़ा फ़र्ज़ है।

The Term : BHUMIHAR

It was the Maharaja of BENARAS - His Highness Maharaja Bahadur Sri Sir Ishwari Prasad Narayan Singh GCSI (1822-13 June 1889) who gave the nomenclature : BHUMIHAR and this was done somewhere around the mid-late 19 th century some 150 years from today.

The Maharaja wanted the Babhans of Bihar to start adopting the word BHUMIHAR - a term he coined to indicate "LAND OWNING" class. And this is what BENARAS RAJAS are famous for - they were the most powerful and when they said something it had to be followed.

When the Maharaja Bahadur Sri Sir Ishwari Prasad Narayan Singh ordered something, even the BRITISH had to listen to them (I will be writing about that in detail) , so how could anyone from this caste oppose him ?

Babu LANGAT SINGH of Muzzaffarpur took it on him to spread and familiarize the BABHANS of Magadh and the Pashim Brahmins of Tirhut with the Term BHUMIHAR. The BHUMIHAR MAHASABHA of 1892 was created for this purpose and even then Tirhut and Magadh wanted it as Paschima BRAHMIN SABHA and BABHAN Mahasabha - but again the then MAHARAJA of BENARAS - His Highness Maharaja Bahadur Sir PRABHU NARAYAN SINGH (26 November 1855 – 4 August 1931)  the most powerful member of the community ordered the word BHUMIHAR to be accepted. And so, the BHUMIHAR BRAHMIN was born.

Later, the Rajas and Maharajas of TEKARI, SHIVHAR, HATHWA and other smaller Zamindaris did everything to popularize the term "BHUMIHAR BRAHMIN".

So, Folks when anyone says proudly he/she is a BHUMIHAR - the credit goes to  MAHARAJA SIR ISHWARI PRASAD NARAYAN SINGH of BENARAS and the most powerful MAHARAJA ever - Maharaja Bahadur Sir PRABHU NARAYAN SINGH of BENARAS too.

Following is the invitation to the 26th BHUMIHAR MAHASABHA of 1924 at Gorakhpur . The chairperson of the Sabha was KashiRaj Maharaj Kumar Sri Aditya Narayan Singh. The invitation was sent to the entire community of Bhumihar, Tyagi and Mohiyal Brahmins by the Raja of Tamkuhi - Indrajeet Pratap Bahadur Shahi (M.L.C), Tamkuhi Naresh.

Later, a Bhumihar Brahmin Publication would come out :

Bihar - Land Reforms coming ?

There is talk of uploading various land records on the official website these can be easily done from Register 2. Yet we find that the following forms are being circulated and Bihar Govt. sources indicate that this needs to be uploaded.

There are no circulars pertaining to the same . If they have to digitize land records, they can just upload from Register 2. Why such forms and without any official communication ?

Local and Non-Resident Biharis - Please be aware.

रैयत को उनके द्वारा धारित भूमिं का आवेदन पत्र क्यों चाहिए बिहार सरकार को ? आखिर क्यों ? Why ?

"Babu" ~ A Title of Respect during BRITISH INDIA

Source :  "SUPPLEMENTAL GLOSSARY OF TERMS USED IN THE NORTH WESTERN PROVINCES.PART III.REVENUE AND OFFICIAL TERMS."

Formerly Babu was used only as a title of respect; now, especially among Europeans, it is used also to designate a native clerk who writes English, such clerks being chiefly Bengalis, among whom the title of Babii has a wider acceptation than in Hindustan.

In Gorakhpur, the descendants of the younger brothers of the Sarnct Raja are called Babu, and there the term, still maintaining its original dignity, is applied generally to any man of family or influence. Crossing the Gogra into Benaudh, and Benares, we find it applied only to the younger brothers, or near
relatives of Rajas. Thus in Reg. VIII. of 1795, Sec. X., Babus are defined to mean "persons of the (Benares) Raja's blood and family." In the East, Babu is also applied to Mussalmans, as Babu Musharraf Ali Khan of Taluka Baz Bahadur in A'zamgarh.—E. add.

The term Babu is now very generally used by Europeans and natives alike, especially in Bengal and Behar, as a title of Zamindars and native gentlemen of wealth and position who have no other special title. The Zamindar of Madhuban in Pargana Mehsi of Champaran has the title of  Rajkumar Babu," to indicate his descent from the family of the Rajas of Sheohar and Maharajas of Betiyii (Bettiah).

This title has been confirmed by Government; but in most cases the title of Babu also is assumed and conferred at the pleasure of the people themselves

1912 Sovereign - GEORGIVS V D.G.BRITT:OMN:REX F.D.IND:IMP:

The above subject line is in LATIN which actually translates as "George the Fifth, by the grace of God,King of all the Britons, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India"

Below is a sovereign in the name of King George V  - Emperor of India, dated 1912 made at the Perth Mint (Australia) of the British Empire and circulated in India after the Delhi Durbar of 1911.

Bare Head of GEORGE V :

ST GEORGE on horseback, slaying DRAGON -

These carry a lot of value especially if they were made at the Mints of Melbourne and Perth compared to the Canadian Mints of the British Empire. The symbols above the date indicate the mints. If there is no letter,it is even more valuable. The value can hover between USD 2000 - USD 6000 per sovereign-depending upon the age and condition of the pieces.

It gives me great pleasure to share the attached photograph of the KING OF SHEOHAR - Raja Deo Nandan Singh. And there were many King's in erstwhile BRITISH INDIA but this King was for the people. He handled the people with great care and took good care of them during the famines that engulfed CHAMPARAN and MUZZAFARPUR. He built schools but never put his name on it. He got respect for his work and high position.

Some refer this KING as RAJA DEORAJ NANDAN SINGH or even RAJA DEOKI NANDAN SINGH.
